Get Your House In Order

The house, in this instance, represents us individually – your house is you. Christians should always have their house in order so how is your house looking nowadays?

When things are not going our way, have you ever wondered to yourself, Lord what am I doing wrong?  When you have prayed, and prayed, and prayed, but it just doesn’t seem like the blessings are coming your way; have you just thought to yourself, God I am being faithful.  We start thinking to ourselves, maybe I’m not praying the right way, or what have is that I have done? Well if you have never done that, I know for a fact that I have done it enough for the both of us!

When you are thinking those things, have you ever considered that maybe you have to much junk behind the front door?  The blessing can’t seem to get beyond the front door of your house because the door can’t be opened.  Have you ever considered that maybe there is too much trash in the front yard, and the delivery man just does not feel like stepping through all that trash just to get to the front door?

Have you ever considered that maybe the delivery man has come knocking on the front door, but you have so much noise going on inside the home that you end up missing the delivery man?  Is it possible that we feel we are struggling because our house is not in order?  Let’s take a look at this.

Our House

The house, in this instance, represents us individually – your house is you.  I think we all feel that the presentation of the outside of a home is likely to represent the inside of the home as well but this may not always be true.  I learned from my mom and dad about maintaining a house.  The first lesson: keep your grass cut and looking good (dad’s lesson).  The second lesson: you never know when a guest may come over so keep your house clean (mom’s lesson).  So, keeping with that thought, how is your house looking nowadays?  Is your house in order?  Let’s get our houses in order.

To build a house you must first gain wisdom.  You just can’t go out and throw a house together or it will tumble and fall over.  As it says in Proverbs 24:3, “through wisdom is a house built.”  A lot of us have been working and building on ourselves – our house – for years.  The key to having a house that can withstand the test of time is having a strong foundation.  You see, you want that foundation to be a foundation of rock.  In this case, your foundation should be the sayings of Jesus Christ.

Build on a solid rock

As it is said:

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine (Jesus), and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock

Matthew 7:24 KJV

I must remind you of those sayings: Jesus preached love for Him and others, and to have faith in Him.  The problem is what happens when the storms of life start to howl and then beat up on us.  We start taking on damage and get worried when those howling winds come knocking against us.  It is important for us Christians to remember that our homes have been built on an solid rock – Jesus Christ.

You cannot call yourself a Christian if your house has not been built on the foundation of Christ.  Some start building their house on the foundation of Christ, but then the sun starts to wear them down and they get tired.  They eventually stop building on that foundation.  Some start building their house on the foundation of Christ, but then they notice that its a tough task and simply quit.  Others get started building on their house on the foundation of Christ, but they let family and friends influence them to stop building.

If you are trying to get your house in order, and have built it on the foundation of Christ, you cannot be stuck trying to go in reverse!  You certainly cannot be stuck on what others have as we so often do.  One of our biggest errors is being envious of what others have, but you have to break away from that train of thought. You never know what kind of foundation somebody else has built their house on.

Some have built the foundation of who they are on Christ but there are several others, who we perceive to be succeeding at life, that have built their house on nothing.

The cost of building on a weak foundation

Jesus said this:

And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. –

Matthew 7:26-27 KJV

The houses of some of your closest people in life may not have a foundation of Christ.  Sure, it may look like everything is going their way, but a house not built on a foundation of Christ will soon meet its match.  There is no need of Christians being envious of others, but we should turn our attention to our house.

A house is built through wisdom; the smart man builds his house on the foundation of Christ.  Understanding then establishes that house. When you establish your house you can’t keep polluting the yard and the inside of the house while trying to keep it clean.  You can’t keep trying to slide old mess up under the rug! Throw that old junk out of your house and clean up your house!

Keep it clean!

You never know when the delivery man is going to stop by your house to deliver a blessing to you.  As I said earlier, my mom is big on keeping a house clean because you never know when you will have a guest over. With that in mind, you never know when Christ is going to come knocking at your door with your blessing.

If there’s trash all over the place, how can you make it to the door?  If there’s a lot of noise in the home, how will you ever hear Him knocking on the door or ringing the doorbell?  A lot of times we miss out on our blessings because our house is filled with so much mess that we can’t get the door or it’s too loud for us to hear the doorbell.

I have mentioned the Son stopping by our house with a delivery, but do you realize that your house also serves as a temple to the Holy Spirit?

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 Corinthians 6:19 KJV

The Holy Spirit operates on our behalf – it is an intercessor.  The Holy Spirit communicates, on our behalf, and delivers our prayers to the Lord.  Now answer these questions for yourself: Would you live in a messy house?  Would you invite a guest into a messy house?  I am certain none of us would live in a messy house.  I am certain none of us would invite a guest into a messy house.  How can we expect the Holy Spirit to live and then operate inside of a messy home?

And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Proverbs 24:4 KJV

I don’t know about you but I want the Holy Spirit to be able to freely operate inside of my house!

I don’t need all the junk of the past, present, or the future to weigh me down.  If I am being weighed down by old junk, I cannot open the door when Jesus comes knocking, and the Spirit is unable to operate inside of me, how in the world can I expect to make it?

I want the knowledge that the Lord provides me with through the Holy Spirit.  I want my chambers to be filled with all the precious and pleasant riches of God’s blessings.  If we get our houses in order, then the Lord will enlighten us and enrich us on our journey through life until we get to meet Him in His kingdom!

We often miss out on blessings, not because the Lord is not listening or paying us any attention, but because we do not have our house in order.  We are unable to see the blessings sitting right there in front of us.  We are unable to hear Jesus knocking on the door.  We are unable to hear Jesus say, “hey, is anybody home?”  We are unable to answer the door to get our blessing because our houses are not in order spiritually!

We must get our house in order.  If we can only get our house in order we can then answer the door, and also allow the Spirit to freely operate and live inside of us.  If our house is in order we can also then show others the way to keep up their homes without them looking at us funny.  The biggest problem we face nowadays is that Christians are almost unrecognizable to non-believers because we are so much like them when that should not be the case! Establish your house and remember that the foundation of who you are is built on Jesus Christ!  If you have to do some spring cleaning to get your house in order then do it!
